October 2013 started off with a short trip to Puerto Rico, where L'Artocarpe met artists from Beta Local. They have a nice residency space and are more than willing to do exchanges with us! Hurray!

Then after L'Artocarpe conference in Jamaica, was the time to fly over to Japan and meet with several artists groups as well as visiting art exhibitions. Nearly 3 weeks in November w-between the Indian summer and the snow...

Back from Japan, a short visit to Jacmel in Haiti, to be part of the fantastic open air exhibition of curator Giscard Bouchotte. We Are Open For Dreaming, the title of the show, was a response to the very provocative advert "Haiti is open for Business", which could be viewed back after the earthquake...
The exhibition has a nice range of Haitian and international artists including: Josué Azor; Mackenson Saint-Félix; Maksaens Denis; Jean-Aurel Maurice; Joël Andrianomearisoa (Madagascar - Paris); Jean-François Boclé (Martinique - Paris); Myriam Mihindou; Antoine Tempe, entre autres.
Les membres David Gumbs et Joëlle Ferly faisaient partie du commissariat et ont été invité par le commissaire. Nous l'en remercions vivement.
Mr Bouchotte is responsible for the great exhibition, Haiti Royaume de Ce Monde, which was first presented at the Agnès B gallery, and then at the Venice Biennale. It ended up in Haiti after a stop in Martinique, at the Clement Foundation. A curator on the high...

Using ship containers, displayed on the main square, the curator wanted to bring contemporary art to the greatest majority of people, who have lesser access to museums and galleries. In the line of the Ghetto Biennale, which took place over the same period in Port-au-Prince, some artists have used discarded objects to make artworks out of them. A nice way to turn unused property into art!

We ended the year 2013 in Martinique so as to catch up on the first edition of the BIAC: Contemporary art Biennale under the direction of Mrs Auguiac, under the initiative of the City of Fort-de-France. The entire show was spread out throughout the island, making it interesting to tour the various cities from North to South.

Spending a morning at the Clement Foundation to assist to the conference of art critic Dominique Berthet, as well as viewing the remarkable exhibition which featured original pieces of the great masters Picasso and Wifredo Lam, was a nice way to make the most of this trip to the sister island. Meeting on the way with other members of L'Artocarpe and colleagues from the Art school...

Then came the visit of the International Pavilion, located in Morne Rouge (North).

Jocelyn Akwaba-Matignon s'inspire de ses connaissances de la cosmogonie maya et de la roue de médecine amérindienne
pour réaliser des œuvres empreintes de cette spiritualité symbolique et chamanique où le soleil régit les orientations de la toile.
Il y ajoute son personnage "Kioukan", issue de son imaginaire, qui représente notre humanité chercheuse de sens
et qui nous questionne sur le temps qui passe, sur notre place dans l’espace du monde et sur « qui » nous sommes.

Au programme: visites de l'école d'art et de certaines institutions du pays. Rencontres avec les étudiants, les panélistes, les professeurs et directeurs des divers départements. Performances, expositions, dance, et débats sont à l'ordre du jour.
L'Artocarpe prend le temps de faire des rencontres avec des groupes d'artistes avec lesquels penser de futurs échanges: c'est le cas de NLS (New Local Space) entre autres.

Le trajet de Guadeloupe à Kingston, JAMAICA, a permis également une escale à Puerto Rico et des rencontres avec d'autres artistes et projets de résidences...

Pleine d'humour, professionnelle et humaine, les qualificatifs ne manquent pas pour présenter Belkis Ramírez, une artiste dont le travail ne cesse d'être cité parmi les références majeures de l'art contemporain de la République Dominicaine.
Au coeur des grandes instances internationales, cette artiste reconnue et expérimentée ne compte pas moins de 12 prix de distinction remportés lors de rencontres entre professionnels.

La résidence de Belkis sera l'occasion pour elle d'avancer sur ses projets artistiques en toute liberté et de nous faire partager ses oeuvres, sa méthode de travail, ses réflexions, ses sources d'inspiration...
Les membres de L'Artocarpe ayant un accès privilégié à l'artiste, seront en mesure de lui soumettre leur portfolio* afin d'avoir un retour d'une ainée en matière d'avancement du travail artistique et d'expérience de vie.

L'Artocarpe donne rendez-vous aux autres artistes et à l'ensemble du public le Jeudi 03 Octobre 2013 à l'Espace régional du Raizet (Abymes, Guadeloupe), à 18h00, afin d'assister à la conférence de l'artiste Belkis Ramírez.
Cet événement s'inscrit dans le cadre de "l'année 2013, La République Dominicaine en Guadeloupe", en partenariat avec la Région Guadeloupe.
L'Artocarpe remercie le Conseil Régional qui offre ainsi à l'artiste Belkis Ramírez une plateforme à la hauteur de son talent et permet du même coup à notre humble structure, de contribuer à cette initiative de plein pied.

Belkis Ramírez fait partie du collectif Quintapata. Avec de ses collègues, Pascal Meccariello, Raquel Paiewonsky et Jorge Pineda, Belkis interroge les pratiques artistiques contemporaines en proposant aussi bien des oeuvres réalisées à quatre qu'en solo.

L'Artocarpe souhaite échanger sur ce bel exemple de la dynamique générée par le groupe en accueillant Belkis sur notre île.

Dans un souci de valoriser les échanges sur du long terme, et de constituer ainsi un réseau solide, L'Artocarpe poursuit son choix de proposer des résidences croisées, à savoir: un artiste membre de L'Artocarpe part vivre et travailler dans un pays et un - ou plusieurs - artistes du pays viennent à L'Artocarpe sur un durée qui peut aller jusqu'à trois mois.

La venue de l'artiste Belkis Ramírez fait suite à la résidence de notre membre François Piquet, parti en République Dominicaine en 2012 avec le soutien de L'Artocarpe.
La résidence de François Piquet a généré un grand nombre d'activités (ateliers, expositions...) et a permis à l'artiste de découvrir un pays de la Caraïbe autrement.

La rencontre avec Belkis Ramírez sera l'occasion pour tous les Guadeloupéens d'aller à la découverte d'une autre culture, celle de la République Dominicaine, encore trop souvent rattachée à des préjugés dénigrants, qu'il est grand temps d'éradiquer de notre psychisme. L'occasion, on l'espère, pour plus d'un, d'aller à la rencontre des ressortissants de la République Dominicaine, qui sont installés en Guadeloupe et contribuent grandement à son économie...

Great sense of humour, real professional and humanist-born, these are just a few of the characteristics which can describe Belkis Ramírez, an artist whose art practice is constantly cited among the greatest names of contemporary art practices of Dominican Republic.
In the heart of all international art instances, this well-known artist holds no less than 12 distinction art prices to her biography, all attributed during professional artistic events.

While in residence at L'Artocarpe, over the period of the 26th September up to the 3rd October, the artist will be able to pursue her personal research as she wishes. Moreover, members of L'Artocarpe will have the great privilege to meet her, to observe her way of working, exchange over her references, and present her their portfolio* in a view of gaining even more feedback from a experimented peer.

L'Artocarpe invites other artists and members of the general public to come to l'Espace régional du Raizet (Abymes, Guadeloupe), on Thursday 03rd October at 18h00, to listen Belkis who will be giving a conference, presenting her work as well as engaging in her vision on contemporary art, touching on the activities of the collective she belongs to: Quintapata.
This event is supported by the Regional Council of Guadeloupe,which is celebrating the Year of 2013 as the "Year of Dominican Republic in Guadeloupe".
L'Artocarpe greatly thanks the Regional Council of Guadeloupe to offer Belkis Ramírez a warm welcome that meets the standards of her talent. In addition to offering L'Artocarpe the opportunity to be part of such dynamic and laudable initiative.

Moreover, the artist will be offering several dates of meetings for activities (workshops, visiting art classes...) to reach out.

L'Artocarpe endeavors to allow crossed residencies to take place whenever possible. That is to say that, when an artist member of L'Artocarpe goes to a country in residence, we try to have at least one artist from this country to come to L'Artocarpe for a residence that can go for a three-month-period of time. That way, we ensure greater bonds, deeper understanding of each-other practices and mutual appreciation.
The coming of Belkis Ramírez takes place in the line of the residency of François Piquet, who left to Dominican Republic back in 2012, for a month residency. François Piquet got the opportunity to run workshops, hold a major exhibition at the Palacio de la Bellas Artes, back then.
A real way for both artist to discover a country of the Caribbean region in a complete different way...

The presence of Belkis Ramírez will be a interesting way for all Guadeloupeans, to discover a neighboring country, which is often labelled with a list of prejudices, that we ought to eradicate once and for all from our psyche. The opportunity is ours, to go and meet up with some of the members of the Dominican Republic who live in Guadeloupe and contribute greatly to its economy...
